What happened? More than 10 years ago, the era of the flip phone began, when Motorola introduced its very first clamshell design. Flip phones were quickly embraced by consumers because they were a real alternative to the expensive cellular phones that filled homes and office lobbies in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Consumers opted for flip phones because they were smaller, quieter, more affordable and easier to use than the big and clunky, expensive and cumbersome cellular phones of the past. Numerous manufacturers adopted the clamshell design, and soon it became the norm. The flip phone was a real success, so much so that it has become a part of our language. We say we're "flip-flopping" on our jobs, we want to "flip out" of a conversation and we're tired of "flipping through" magazines and newspapers. But, as the first generation of flip phones have become outdated and are being replaced by new models, they've become part of the pop culture. One of the most popular, humorous web sites is called the "No True Scotsman" site. It
